Arnold Markham was a rich and somewhat eccentric man born in the 1800's, with only one dream. He wanted to open an asylum. So when an old prison in his area closed down and the land went up for sale, he purchased it, and had the building of his dreams constructed. Unfortunately, Markham himself never got to see its opening day, for he was killed in a laboratory accident two weeks before.
It was originally a centre for the troubled youth, aged fourteen to twenty-one. However, in the late 1900's, the owners decided that it might be good for business if they allowed their patients to stay longer than their 20th birthday, also allowing other patients. However, they do not accept patients over 30 years old, at the moment.
The asylum is very remote, and very grand. It boasts the best physical and mental care money can buy. The outside and grounds are breathtaking, but what the families don't know is that the patients never see the grounds, only out of the windows. No investigations have been made into the care in the asylum - and that's a good thing for its staff. Some of them have taken their positions of power for granted, and use physical and mental abuse on the patients. It's all kept very hushed, and the administration pretends not to notice.
Why don't the patients speak up? It's simple - their lives are threatened. And it's a well known fact that once you step through Markham's doors, you're not likely to ever get out.
